300 donors with a difference needed for life-saving treatment
Perth residents are being asked to make a life-changing donation, with a difference.
The Red Cross in Perth needs locals to donate their poo in the next month as part of its Perth-based microbiome pilot to help patients suffering from serious and life-threatening bowel infection.
Lifeblood supplies the processed stool product, known as faecal microbiota for transplant (FMT), to Fiona Stanley Hospital for patient treatments as part of the pilot.
Red Cross microbiome manager Elizabeth Connolly told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings wonderful treatments can be made from poo.
“The whole process is quite simple actually: once you became an eligible or accepted donor, we take a person’s donated stool, we process it, mix it with some saline, freeze it and send it off to hospital, where it’s transplanted into someone’s bowel,” she said.
“It’s not a scary process at all, I promise. It’s very private, we have wonderful staff and a lovely refreshment centre, so people can relax and have tea and coffee before and after their donation.”
