Four million live blue mussels will be seeded across pilot reefs in the Swan River between Point Walter (Bicton) and Point Dundas (Applecross).

Project coordinator for The Nature Conservancy Australia’s ‘Oceans Program’, Andrew Bossie, told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings the project was part of the Swan Canning Estuary shellfish reef restoration project.

He said mussel reefs will boost the health of the estuary by filtering millions of litres of water, providing habitat for many different species and increasing fish productivity, but warned people off eating them… for now.

“We like to think people will steer clear of eating them off our reefs, just so they get enough time to build up a strong, resilient population,” Bossie said.
