40km/h speed limit success urges city council to drop limits even further
Ahead of National Road Safety Week the peak body for cyclists is highlighting the success of the City of Vincent’s reduction of speed limits on local streets.
Evidence shows the speed that minimises the likelihood of serious injury or death in the case of an impact is 30km/h.
In response to community requests for safer streets, the City of Vincent recently succeeded in permanently reducing the speed limit, and are potentially looking to drop it even more to match WestCycle’s recommendations.
“The time frame to get to thirty was more medium- to long-term; we were thinking sort of in three to five years, depending on how we can embed this current forty kilometer slow speed zone in all
our streets over the next few years,” Vincent CEO David MacLennan told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons.
