At least six people have been killed in a devastating fire at a Wellington hostel.

The four-storey Loafer’s Lodge Hostel has a capacity for 92 guests, and while authorities report 52 people have been accounted for, there is still multiple people missing.

Newstalk ZB reporter Nick James told Millsy and Karl fire services have said the fire is a “once in a decade” event.

“This is not a normal thing here, especially in the middle of Wellington’s CBD; it’s just a tragic, tragic event,” Mr James said.
