A Perth street will have its name changed in order to commemorate a massively influential Indian who served in the Australian Imperial Army, spurned by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.
Nelson Avenue in East Perth will now be known as Sailani Avenue, named in honour of one of Australia’s first Indian ANZACs.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas told Gary Adshead onĀ 6PR Mornings the name change request came straight form our own Prime Minister in an effort to raise more awareness of our links to the subcontinent.
“As this story filtered through to Prime Minister Modi, it had a personal impact on him because it’s a recognition, in essence, of all the Indian AZACs,” Mr Zempilas said.
