A Liberal Member of Parliament has struck out at the State Government and Department of Justice over an apparent lack of oversight on prison parolees, arguing they’ve lost control of the process.

It was revealed in yesterday’s Budget Estimates the number and location of parolees missing from records is unknown.

Liberal MLC Nick Goiran told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings the government should be able to provide information on such a serious topic.

“Seven weeks of parliamentary question after parliamentary question, and no-one is able to answer those questions,” Mr Goiran said.

Press PLAY to hear more about the confusion over parolee records

The DoJ have released the following statement in response:

All parolees are individually case managed and their status is understood at all times. The Department is able to list the number of Parolees who have an active return to prison warrant (suspension), however it involves a manual search of records.

When Adult Community Corrections suspends a Parolee, a return to prison warrant (suspension) is issued and sent to WAPF who are responsible for executing the warrant and returning the offender to prison. Adult Community Corrections will continue to actively case manage the offender and the follow up with WAPF through the provision of information to assist in the execution of the warrant.
