Environment Minister Reece Whitby has today launched the first state level feral cat strategy, with the aim of tackling ongoing population decline of native animals.

Mr Whitby told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings the legislation aims to target the problem at the source.

“They are often large, ferocious beasts that are finely-tuned killing machines,” Mr Whitby said.

“They reap a terrible toll on our wildlife.”

Centre for Invasive Species Feral Cat and Fox Management Coordinator Gillian Basnett told Karl and Gena on 6PR Breakfast the damage feral cats do across the country is well-known.

“The strategy is regarding feral cats, but cats right across metro and regional areas will hunt wildlife and c
