The mayor of Linyi – the Chinese city that has recently made Australian headlines over their contentious relationship with Albany – was ‘purged’ by governmental authorities in 2020, according to the Albany councillor who first raised alarm bells.

Doctor Thomas Brough raised eyebrows when he recommended Albany scrap their relationship with Linyi due to questionable activity on behalf of diplomats and Chinese Communist Party members.

Australian reporter Paul Garvey told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings publications in China described the mayor’s “disloyalty and to the Party and corrupt practices” at the time.

“Doctor Brough is also highlighting how these sorts of incidents have a habit of popping up in China when there’s a certain political figure that hasn’t towed the party line,” Mr Garvey said.
