The federal government has confirmed Philip Lowe will not have his term as Reserve Bank Governor extended.

Doctor Lowe has served in the role for seven years, but in recent years has been criticised over his handling of interest rates.

Deputy Governor Michelle Bullock has been promoted to the position, becoming the first female Governor of the RBA.

Ms Bullock will begin as Reserve Bank Governor from September 18th.
