The City of Bayswater and the Town of Cambridge have narrowly passed motions requiring councillors to declare social media interests.

The new “social media interest register” has divided the community, with some applauding the transparency and others raising concerns the motion is a breach of privacy.

Adjunct Research Fellow at John Curtin Institute of Public Policy Andy Asquith spoke with Oly Peterson on 6PR’s Perth Live.

“One of the issues around local government is transparency. If people don’t know what their councils are doing they’re less likely to engage.”
