Smart choice, Fremantle
Matthew Pavlich is the Fremantle Dockers most storied player.
But the South Australian could have ended up an any of the other 16 AFL clubs when he was finally drafted in 1999.
Every club had the opportunity to draft Pavlich as a 17-year-old the year before but overlooked him as well as Paul Hasleby.
‘The clubs could have chosen a 17-year-old in that ’98 draft and both Haze and Pavlich got overlooked,’ Smart said.
‘Geelong, who has probably got the best record in the draft for a long period of time, they didn’t take a 17-year-old.
‘So they could have taken either of those boys at 80 or 90 in the draft with their last pick.’
