A man who was shot this afternoon during a confrontation with police in Kalgoorlie has died in hospital.

Officers were called to a residential area of South Kalgoorlie after receiving reports that an armed man was in the area.

Police say shots were fired, and the man, in his 50s, sustained a serious injury.

Major Crime detectives have been sent to the Goldfields city to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

Police involved in the incident are receiving health and welfare support.
