UPDATE: The man allegedly responsible for a bizarre string of crimes in Cervantes last week has been identified.

Police found the burnt out car along Indian Ocean drive but couldn’t identify the remains inside the vehicle; they allege the victim was driving a red SUV when he came across Benjamin McLaughlin and an incident occurred between the two.

Mr Mclaughlin was later found by fishermen, naked and behaving erratically with the SUV submerged in the bay.

He’s now due to appear this morning charged with murder, criminal damage by fire and stealing a motor vehicle.

Forensic investigators found human remains in a burnt-out two-door Pajero sedan on Indian Ocean Drive in Jurien Bay, about 200 km north of Perth.

“It’s likely it would have attracted attention because we believe it was travelling at speed,” Senior Sergeant McDonald said.

It follows the arrest of a man found naked on a stolen boat drifting out to sea, as well as another submerged vehicle believed to be driven off a jetty.

Nine News reporter Emma Griffiths told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the incidents are believed to have all occurred around the same time.

“Police will hopefully address answer all the questions journalists, locals and the public have about what happened in this small, quiet town,” Ms Griffiths said.
