‘The landscape has changed’: Nationals defection threatens party solidarity

Article image for ‘The landscape has changed’: Nationals defection threatens party solidarity

Defecting Nationals MP Merome Beard says her loyalty lies with her constituents, not her party.

The member for North West Central has handed her resignation to Leader Shane Love, and indicated she wants to jump ship to the Liberals.

Ms Beard told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings she believes the Liberals have the best chance at delivering change for WA.

“The Labor Party have actually silenced regional voices; the landscape has changed significantly,” Ms Beard said.

Clearly State Opposition and WA Nationals Leader Shane Love is not happy about the situation, arguing Ms Beard’s constituents voted for a Nationals member, not a Liberal.

“I feel dissapointed for the people that supported Mem,” Mr Love said.

“There’s people who spent weeks of their time and their money to assist her into a role in parliament, only to find she’s turned her back on them.”
