Kwinana Freeway cameras reveal startling trends leading to enforcement use

Every day, over 60 individuals are caught without seatbelts on the Kwinana Freeway by surveillance cameras, with around 5,500 drivers caught monthly for using their phones while driving.

Currently, cameras on the Kwinana Freeway are currently not being used for enforcement, but Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner is looking to change this during the year.

Commissioner Warner told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “Too many people are breaking the rules too often. What we are saying is based on this research, they say if we were more afraid of getting caught then we’d probably behave a bit better. And that’s what we are looking for people behaving better on the roads.”

“When we turn them on for enforcement, which we hope to do later this year, we will get a sense of if they’re changing behaviour,” Commissioner Warner
continued.
