Discover Aurora Australis: Southern Hemisphere’s captivating light show

Ever heard of the Aurora Australis? It’s the Southern Hemisphere’s version of the Aurora Borealis, and there is one place that offers the best views of this captivating light show.

Professor of Physics at the University of Tasmania Andrew Cole told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons, “There’s not a lot of population centres below where the Southern Lights appear, you’d have to be in Antarctica to get a really equivalent view to what people see in Scandinavia or Northern Canada with the Northern Lights, it’s just harder to get to.”

“We’re at the peak of the cycle now, where the magnetic field is at it’s most chaotic, it’s crackling activity so it’s the best time to go Aurora chasing.”

“Any place with a really good view of the southern horizon [is the best place to see the lights] and you want to be away from the city lights, away from Hobart and you’ll see the glow which can be anywhere from low on the southern horizon to all the way overhead,” Professor Cole said.
