Education expert warns against excessive extracurricular activities for kids
An education expert has suggested that excessive extracurricular activities can overwhelm and exhaust children.
RMIT Education expert Dr Elise Waghorn told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “It’s a fine balance of what’s appropriate and what’s not. But I think a lot of kids are experiencing burnout, they’re just doing too much and don’t have time to be kids.”
“A good number [of extracurriculars] is usually about one to two. But the thing is each child is individual, some can handle more and some children can’t handle as much. So what is really important for parents to do is to look at their child and go what are they capable of doing, what’s not burning them out and how are they actually enjoying it.”
“It’s having a flow-on effect to all different areas of their life. It’s having a big impact on all different areas of their day-to-day living,” Dr Waghorn said.
