A first-of-its-kind fishing device designed by local octopus experts is transforming the industry to diminish accidental capture of non-targeted species and fishing waste.

Fremantle Octopus has designed the Trigger Trap,  focusing on size, angle and and the inclusion of orange plastic crab to specifically lure only adult octopuses.

Managing Director Glenn Wheeler told Chrissy Morrissy on 6PR Afternoons how the uniqueness of the product is leading to high international demand.

“We’re not in the business of selling the traps so much as we are in growing the size of WA’s octopus fishery…We’re employing more and more people,” Mr Wheeler said.
