WA rental reforms passed: Rent increases limited, ‘bidding’ banned
WA rental reforms have passed in parliament. These changes will limit rent increases to once per year and bidding for leases will be banned.
Commerce Minister Sue Ellery told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the changes will occur in two parts, the first in May and the next in July.
“Currently, landlords or tenants need to take the matter to the Magistrates Court, it’s time consuming, costly and frankly it’s a bit intimidating for both sides,” Minister Ellery said.
“What’s going to change is, the Consumer Protection Commissioner will make determinations, she will will issue reasons for each of her decisions. It’s her intention to build a bank of decisions so people understand what the rules are.”
