The most dire clinical mistakes in West Australian hospitals – like medication errors, surgeons doing the wrong surgery and leaving objects inside patients, resulting in serious harm and death – have climbed nearly 60 per cent.

And the state opposition says this continued growth in incidents known as “sentinel events” is because the government is ignoring an ongoing staffing crisis.

WAToday‘s State Political Reporter Hamish Hastie told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons “sentinel events” refers to the very worst mistakes made in hospitals.

“Predictably, Libby Mettam among others is quite annoyed at these results,” Mr Hastie said.
