‘Jack’s Law’ to grant police unprecedented powers in tackling knife crime
New legislation has been drafted to introduce tough new knife laws in WA, allowing police to scan for weapons in any public place without requiring reasonable suspicion.
Changes will be made to the Weapons Act to include a new category for bladed weapons, which will increase the penalties for illegal possession to five years jail and a $60,000 fine.
Brett Beasley – the Queensland father of Jack Beasley, who was fatally stabbed in 2019 on the Gold Coast – told Gary Adshead onĀ 6PR Mornings “Jack’s Law” has seen huge support in Queensland, and should receive the same here.
“I made a promise to my son that I would change the laws, because I was sick and tired of hearing [of] these young people losing their lives to some mongrel walking around armed with a knife,” Mr Beasley said.
