The Arson squad is investigating a suspicious fire at Karrakatta cemetery which caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

Firefighters were called out at around 11.30pm on Tuesday night to a fire at the Norfolk Chapel, the largest of the three indoor chapels at the cemetery.

6PR and Nine News Reporter Connor McGoverne told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast crews managed to contain the fire before it destroyed surrounding infrastructure.

CEO of the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board Kathlene Oliver has also spoken out for the first time since the fire
