This week is National Carers Week, and two carers who have experienced the absolute highs and lows are the parents of BMX Olympic gold medal winner Saya Sakakibara. Saya’s brother, Kai, was on his way to Olympic glory himself when he was involved in a horrific crash, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury.

Parents Martin and Yuki Sakakibara spoke to 6PR Mornings host Gary Adshead about the invaluable role of carers.

“He spent his whole life wanting to be an Olympian, and the rug was pulled out from under his feet,” he said.
