Perth’s scurvy case: the byproduct of a cost of living crisis
A case of scurvy has been diagnosed in Perth, raising concerns that the cost of living is putting others at risk.
This now-rare disease was prevalent in the 15th to 18th centuries when sailors lacked access to fresh fruits and vegetables, resulting in vitamin deficiencies.
Louise Giolitto from the WA Council of Social Service explained to 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl why we are seeing a resurgence of this disease.
“They’ve used all their income to pay their rent, mortgage, or utility bills, so they don’t have enough money to put three healthy meals on the table,” she said.
