Expert not convinced health checks for ageing doctors will be beneficial
Proposed health checks for GPs over 70 could exacerbate doctor shortages, as almost 10% of current Australian GPs are over 70.
Michael Clements, RACGP Rural Chair, told 6PR’s Breakfast hosts Ian and Mick that while the regulatory authority has observed an increase in complaints with age, there is no evidence that health checks will address the issue.
“We know that many GPs are staying on and working longer because the community needs them. If we start putting barriers in front of them staying at work, we could face an even greater shortage,” he said.
