Yesterday’s story, which revealed that Yalgoo will have to foot a $6 million bill after being knocked back for funding from the Disaster Ready Fund, has put the bureaucratic process for receiving the funding under the spotlight, with claims that other shires have given up on lodging claims.

Yalgoo CEO Ian Holland explains to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that he disagrees with the notion that DFES supported the shire in the process, claiming they weren’t assigned a case officer for six months, they have been given conflicting information, and video footage of the damage has been deleted by DFES.

“It’s even worse than that, it’s DFES telling me that a policy that I wrote, that I have an incorrect interpretation of,” he said.

Simon then spoke to Merome Beard, Member for North-West Central, who is staggered by the bureaucratic red tape these small communities have had to deal with to get assistance.

“I think it is unacceptable that they can’t appeal, there’s no appeal process, and just to shut the door on them I think is entirely unreasonable,” she said.
