A Perth school principal used his time in the lime light, after receiving an award, to put forward his thoughts about the current school structure saying sirens and timetables should be done away with.

Scotch College headmaster Alec O’Connell was recognised for his contribution to education theory and practice in WA by the Australian College of Educators and says the short periods and changing topics doesn’t give students a chance to absorb the information under the current school structure.

It got Steve and Baz asking, who had double periods at school and did they work?

Listener Hamish says he had a double free period so he would go surfing in that time, while a science teacher called to say:
“having double periods is fantastic when you have practicals to do, if you’ve got single periods then by the time you get the gear out, suit it up, you’ve got to pack up.”
But Mark added he didn’t necessarily agree with Mr O’Connell’s ideas: “knocking the current system is all well and good but he’s actually got to tell us exactly what his alternative is.”
