Article image for GAME DAY: Dogs Day for the Grand Final

The Western Bulldogs have broken a 62-year drought to win the 2016 AFL Premiership by 22-points in a thrilling match against the Sydney Swans on Saturday.

It was a see-sawing game throughout the afternoon, but the Dogs ran out at the end of the game with Liam Picken and Tom Boyd coming out heros with three goals between them to finish the game, 13.11 (89) to 10.7 (67).

The final scoreline was the biggest of the game with the margin remaining within a single digit for a majority of the match. The Swans were the first on the scoreboard after 12 minutes of play, but the Bulldogs answered back last in the first for a four-point lead at the first break.

The Dogs got out by 16-points early in the second quarter, but the Swans were close behind kicking ahead for a two-point lead at the main break in a term that saw 11-goals kicked.

It was goal for goal in the fourth quarter until the final few minutes were the Dogs’ as they raced to the historical finish.

Boyd stood up in the second half for three goals in total, Picken also kicked three goals, but Jason Johannisen was best on ground and won the Norm Smith medal for his 33 disposals and seven marks.

Emotions ran high when Bulldogs coach, Luke Beveridge handed his Premiership medal to injured team captain Bob Murphy.
