Magda Szubanski’s first book a prizewinner
Magda Szubanski has been a name attributed to Australian comedy and acting for decades, but the talented comedian recently turned her hand to writing, releasing a memoir, Reckoning, which has taken out a converted award this week.
Szubanski has a new-found talent in writing with her candid storytelling delving into her family’s history and her own life. Her efforts were recognised on Monday night when she won a NSW Premier’s Literary Award for a non-fiction book, the Douglas Stewart Prize, beating well-known authors, including Tim Winton.
‘It’s about really the way one generation impacts upon the other and so on, the sort of ripple effect down through the generations.
‘So it’s really more than just my life, it’s a family saga and particularly, of course, it’s about my father who… was an assassin in a top secret counter intelligence unit for the Polish resistance,’ Szubanski told Peter Bell on 6PR’s Afternoons show.
