Sports clubs face funding cuts if they don’t commit to gender equality

WA sporting associations could be stripped of Government funding – if they don’t commit to gender equality.

The State Government wants more women involved in sport, and not just at the grassroots.

Last year, national targets were set to bring female representation on state sporting association boards up to 50 per cent.

The funding sports receive from the state government will soon be linked to their performance in achieving gender balance in leadership.

The Minister for Women’s Interests Simone McGurk told Gareth Parker the 50 percent quota is needed to break the cycle of men hiring other men.

A three year transition period will be given to assist sports in achieving the target.
