PathWest cloak of secrecy regarding misdiagnosed patient
Questions are being asked following the death of a patient who was misdiagnosed by a state-owned pathology clinic.
PathWest diagnosed the man with bladder cancer in November 2018, he underwent chemotherapy and surgery, before suffering a stroke a month later – it was then found the man actually had prostate cancer.
He died in a private hospice in April last year — a report into the incident found an experienced consultant pathologist was meant to give a second opinion on the man’s initial results, but because of leave at the time, that didn’t happen.
Executive Director of the Health Consumer’s Council of WA Pip Brennan told Gareth Parker on Mornings there needs to be more transparency around incidents.
