Contact tracing is important, but so is data security

A new tracking app could be rolled out in Australia to help speed up contact tracing when people are diagnosed with COVID-19.

The opt-in app is being developed by the federal government, based on one being used in Singapore called “Trace Together”.

It will track people’s movements to speed up contact tracing if another user is diagnosed.

Professor in Communications and Media Studies from Monash University Mark Andrejevic told Oliver Peterson while contact tracing is an important part of managing this pandemic, data security is also key.

“As long as it looks like something where people are provided a degree of confidence in how their data is being handled – who has access to it and how long it’s gong to be stored. It makes sense for people to download it for a way to assist with contact tracing.”
