Perth Zoo is back. The popular attraction reopened today for the first time since restrictions forced its closure 10 weeks ago.

Phase 3 easing of restrictions meant the zoo could open from today. Tickets must be bought online to help with contact tracing and only 3500 will be sold for any one day.

Perth Zoo Executive Director Wendy Attenborough joined the Weekend Catch-Up where she told Mark Gibson despite the zoo being able to host more people, they want to give the animals time to adjust.

“We were keen to give a gentle introduction to our animals,” said Ms Attenborough.

“They’ve been without big crowds for almost 11 weeks. We didn’t want to give them too rude of a shock.”

Ms Attenborough added that the animals do experience enrichment from seeing the visitors to the zoo.

“There’s nothing like the faces of small, excited children to entertain the animals as well.”

Social distancing paw prints and sanitation stations have been placed all over the zoo to ensure patron safety.
