Just a spoonful of honey….

Simon Beaumont

It’s a common old wives tale that a spoonful of honey helps relieve a child’s cough. But is there any foundation in science?

AMA (WA) Councillor and General Practice Group Chairperson Dr Simon Torvaldsen told Gareth Parker there is a number of studies to suggest honey does work.

“There was a statement from the Royal College of General Practitioners after they’ve looked into the available research to say it works, said Dr Torvaldsen

He also adds that cough syrups are a waste of time for children.

“Remedies from the pharmaceutical companies don’t work particularly well. It’s not as though we have things in the chemists that are really fantastic or safe for children.”
