Western Australia is set to be rewarded with more big ticket, blockbuster games on the back of the AFL Grand Final.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan told Gareth Parker he’s been blown away by the support from WA footy fans.

“There’s a huge energy and demand that I took for granted.

“What’s stuck me is how appreciative West Australians are.

“There’s a respect and an empathy for the loss the Victorians are feeling.”

The response to the Dreamtime match and now the Grand Final have “opened people’s eyes up” to the opportunities in the West.

“We know this is a football town,” said Mr McLachlan.

“We might have a silver lining for West Australians where there’ll be more big games coming to this town.

“I’m confident about that.”

For a second year running the AFL season has been severely affected by the pandemic with hubs, empty stadiums and last minute fixture changes. Mr McLachlan admitted he won’t relax until people start filing through the gates tomorrow.

“When people start filing in, that’ll be a big part of the relief,” he said.

Mr McLachlan feels it’ll be a close game tomorrow between the Demons and Bulldogs.

“I hope it’s a cracker for all of us, particularly West Australians,” he said.
