‘Awful cocktail of various chemicals’: New research shines the light on vaping liquid
New research funded by the Minderoo Foundation has found that vaping liquids contain a number of chemicals, some at dangerously high levels.
It’s part of the Collaborate Against Cancer Initiative with the result to be published in the Medical Journal of Australia.
It comes as new regulation came into effect on October 1 requiring anyone purchasing vaping products containing nicotine from WA must gave a prescription from a GP.
Minderoo Foundation CEO Dr Steve Burnell said a “pretty awful of various chemicals” were found in the vaping liquids that they studied.
“This study was around 65 vape juices … these were supposed to not contain nicotine, so it’s this really unregulated part of the market, not the things you need a prescription for if you’re trying to quit.
“In 21 per cent there’s trace nicotine so that has all sort of worries about enforcement and regulation because that’s illegal.
“And they’re containing to be non-nicotine e-liquids, so that’s concerning in it’s own right, especially for addicting new smokers.”
