Why avocado growers are dumping their crops
A West Australian avocado grower says there has been the perfect storm of logistical issues that has led to some farmers dumping their crops.
A lack of workers to pick the fruits combined with a bumper harvest has resulted in thousands of avocados being thrown out.
Manjimup avocado farmer Vic Grozotis told Gareth Parker with prices so low, many farmers aren’t bothering to pick the fruit.
“We’ve had massive production all around Australia,” he said.
“We’ve had the lockdown in Sydney and Melbourne, which are our biggest markets. We’ve had extreme difficulty in the export area because of the high cost of containes … and also the cost of air freighters is extremly expensive.”
