Tennis star, Paralympic gold medallist and disability advocate Dylan Alcott has made history after being named 2022 Australian of the Year.

He is the first person with a disability to claim the award in its 62-year history.

Mr Alcott is revered for his efforts on and off the court, and is a powerful advocate for Australians living with a disability.

The tennis golden grand slam winner says he thought he had “no chance” at winning the honour, and he feels like the “luckiest guy in this country”.

Alcott is the world number one and will retire after playing in Thursday’s Australian Open final.

The 31-year-old is chasing his eighth straight crown at Melbourne Park.
