Year 12 ball reinstated at Perth school after heavy backlash from parents on 6PR
Canning Vale College year 12 students – with the help of 6PR Breakfast – are celebrating this afternoon after a petition to overturn a staff decision to cancel their school ball was overturned.
Principal Paul Bottcher said the school was not fully across the chief health officer’s advice on attending public events.
“I have been informed … infrequent special events such as school balls held off-site are to continue, provided physical distancing requirements, mask mandates and venue rules are complied with and COVID-19 safe plans are in place,” he wrote to parents this afternoon.
“As such, I am pleased to advise that our school ball has been reinstated and will proceed as planned under the current public health advice.”
One parent, Tracey, who helped students organise a petition that reached its goal of 500 signatures in less than a day, thanked the station for its support.
“The students and parents made themselves heard. The school blocked many avenues relating to the petition but it was shared by too many people,” she said.
Education Minister Sue Ellery had earlier confirmed to 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker that school balls were permitted under WA’s strict COVID rules and could go ahead.
“Special-one off events are allowed as long as they follow the venue’s rules with vaccinations and masks,” she said.
