‘Carrying the scars’: Review reveals WA Institute of Sport abuse allegations
The country’s sporting regulator, Sport Integrity Australia, has investigated allegations of mistreatment of gymnasts at the Western Australian Institute of Sport.
The independent investigation has confirmed that ‘harm was suffered’ by many athletes.
The review has been compiled from the evidence of 92 former gymnasts.
During 6PR’s Morning program, Liam Bartlett detailed the results from the report:
“Of those 92, 32 of them mentioned that there was a feeling like they or their daughter needed to train through injuries or reported being made to train through injuries,” he said.
“49 of them felt that there was body shaming in the WA gymnastic program. And 44 mentioned hearing and or experiencing negative connotations around skinfolds and weight management.”

Liam Bartlett spoke to one of the former gymnasts who gave evidence to allow the report to be put together.
Julia Murcia said that there were no surprises in the results of how many gymnasts had been allegedly mistreated.
“I’ve read the nearly 50 odd submissions that we put forward, and they’re absolutely horrifying,” she said.
“I think it’s pretty obvious if this was any other organisation where you’ve got a CEO that’s been there for the entirety of the abuse. The Chair who has been there for part of the abuse and upper management that possibly were even the abusers I think that’s a pretty good place to start.”
