Breakthrough treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer in Australia
Australians with non-melanoma skin cancer are trialling a new treatment designed to replace invasive surgery and radiation.
Onca Beta medical director Dr Sam Vohra told 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker the treatment was relatively new for the Australian market and was essentially a resin that was painted onto the tumour and the particles in the resin killed the cancerous cells, inducing the body to have an immune response, with great cosmetic results.
“It’s actually applied over a clear film, so it never touches the patient’s skin,” she told Parker.
“It’s a one-off treatment, it’s completely painless, it sort of peels off and over the next few weeks the patient sees a sort of scab forming, as you would with any other wound healing, and then some nice new skin forming underneath that.”
