EXCLUSIVE: Sister of one-punch attack victim Josh Maffina speaks on sentencing

The sister of a one-punch attack victim has told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings that although it had been a long nine months for her brother, he had reached some after the sentencing of his attacker on Friday.

Michael Robert Keddie was sentenced on Friday for the attack on Josh Maffina, who was knocked to the ground by a single unprovoked blow outside a Success pub in June last year.

Mr Maffina survived but has ongoing physical and mental issues.

Karlee Fuller told Liam Bartlett that she hopes Keddie learns his lesson this time, given his previous conviction of a similar attack.

“I really do hope he does take the time this time to really reflect. Josh has had nine months of his life completely stolen he’ll never get back.”

Boxing champion Danny Green who spearheads a campaign against coward punches, told Bartlett that light sentences for perpetrators send a poor message.

“It sends a very poor message, and it’s unfortunate that the police officers and the police force do their work in bringing these people to the courtrooms, then they’re given a slap on the wrist. What confidence does that give us in the constitution?”
