The parents of Danny Hodgson have expressed their frustration over the “light” sentence handed down to the teenager responsible for the brutal one-punch attack on their son, last year.

The now 17-year-old was sentenced in Perth Children’s Court today, to 3 years and 8 months in juvenile detention for the attack – which left Danny Hodgson fighting for his life.

The teen will be eligible for early release after 22 months.

He was on bail for 23 other offences including serious unprovoked assaults and aggravated robbery, when the one-punch attack occurred.

“Regardless of the light sentence that the offender got today, Danny’s serving his sentence for the rest of his life,” Peter Hodgson said outside court.

6PR and Nine News reporter Jake Battrick told Oliver Peterson, distressing CCTV of the lead-up to the attack, was shown to the court during the sentencing.

“These leading doctors that treated Danny in the intensive care unit had never seen anybody survive the brain injury that Danny sustained that night, when he was punched in the jaw and fell back and hit his head,” he said.

“The moments leading up to the attack were completely unprovoked and it was pretty distressing. His family were pretty upset.”
