Mayor says Geraldton wine ban to curb alcohol-related violence had no impact
Mayor Shane Van Styn, City of Greater Geraldton Mayor, has said that the move to ban specific alcohol in Geraldton had no impact on controlling violence in the community.
Last Thursday, Geraldton police walked into a local bottle shop and banned cask sales for four days.
As of midnight last night, a ban has been lifted on the cask wine. Shane Van Styn told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings that the decision didn’t make any sense.
“There was nothing stopping them (from) going and buying twenty 1 litre bottles of wine. There was certainly nothing stopping them from buying vodka or any other drink. It was specifically Fruity Lexia and Tawny Port in four-litre casks,” he said.
“Rather than one person going and buying one 4 litre box, two people would simply go and buy two 2 litre boxes.”
