Road safety camera trial to target WA drivers on mobile phones
WA motorists who use their mobile phone while driving could face even more scrutiny from authorities with a new camera trial.
WA Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner said the state had recently adjusted fines and demerit points for certain penalties, particularly drivers on mobile phones.
“We increased mobile phone fines significantly and we’re looking to enforce those, or look to a trial of safety cameras, to pick up [more] mobile phone use,” he told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
Research showed about 80 per cent support for harsher penalties on WA drivers using mobile phone.
Since 2020, WA drivers caught reading or sending a text message, emailing, checking social media or watching videos while behind the wheel face $1000 fines and the loss of four demerit points.
A new road safety social media campaign had also launched to help reduce fatalities in regional WA among young men not wearing seatbelts.
“Between 60 and 70 per cent of deaths without seatbelts are in the regions and predominantly young males,” Warner said on Tuesday.
Queensland authorities have just upped the ante in road safety penalties, with drivers facing a $1000 fine for not wearing a seatbelt, and minimum speeding fines bumped up to almost $300.
