Gareth Parker says calls to sack Eagles coach off the mark

6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker has hit out at Footy Classified panelist Kane Cornes and other AFL commentators after the former Port Adelaide champion suggested the Eagles should sack Adam Simpson and chase legendary Hawthorn mentor Alastair Clarkson.

West Coast has sunk to the bottom of the ladder for the first time since 2010 after Friday night’s 109-point loss at home to Richmond

Simpson is contracted until the end of 2024, having signed an extension in the middle part of last season, but Cornes said on the Nine’s Footy Classified the club should chase one of the game’s greatest ever coaches.

“I think West Coast are going to have a massive crack at him, whether he is up for a rebuild and what the club needs — but they have got the money, they are a big club and I think it would be enticing,” Kane said on Monday.

Parker thought the idea was ludicrous: “There’s plenty of reasons to be negative, we understand that.”

“I think it’s pretty clear the Eagles were too optimistic about the state of their list… and I suppose yes the Tim Kelly trade looks like a mistake from this distance.

“I don’t think there’s a shortcut here for the Eagles. The biggest issue is the list here at the moment … not necessarily the coach or his method.”
