City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has ruled out a run at state politics at the next election.

Speaking to Steve Mills on 6PR Afternoons, Mr Zempilas said he’s happy in his current role, and would focus on re-running for Lord Mayor at the next Council elections in 2023.

“I’m apolitical in my role,” he said.

“In my role as Lord Mayor, the only politics is to go as hard as I possibly can for the city.

“I’m a fierce advocate for the city, at times that means I’m in lock-step with the government, at other times that might mean we’re opposed in our views.

“But as long as I’m going hard for the city, then I’m doing my job.

“And my only political aspirations as they stand right now, are with the job that I’ve got – I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
