The Canadian government has announced it will allow the province of British Columbia to try a three-year experiment in decriminalising possession of small amounts of drugs.

Leading Perth criminal barrister Tom Percy QC says WA should try something similar, telling Millsy at Midday host Steve Mills the experiment was a good start.

“You got to go back to grassroots and say we’re gonna stop this by penalising people who supply but tackle people who use it and deal with them as a health problem,” he said.

“I think that’s what they’re doing it in Canada, they’re not just bringing this in overnight as some random measure, that some person has thought of out of the blue, this has been heavily researched.”
