The humble side salad could be on the way out as the rising cost of ingredients hits publicans’ purses.

Some South Australian pubs are considering dropping the often overlooked plate staple while The Wheatsheaf pub is offering extra chips in lieu of a side of salad, as so many were left uneaten.

Andrea in Mt Lawley told Gareth Parker on Breakfast about a new style of salad at The Orient Hotel in Fremantle, which contained no lettuce, that was served with her fish and chips.

“Do you eat the side salad or does it go back untouched?” asked Gareth.
