Calls for increase in learner hours after teens killed in South West crash
New debate has begun over how many supervised driving hours learners must complete before getting their licence.
The deaths of two 17-year-olds on Saturday afternoon have sparked the debate when their ute rolled seven times on the South Western Highway.
WA learner drivers must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, compared to 120 hours in New South Wales and Victoria.
Australian Road Safety Foundation CEO Russell White told Liam Bartlett onĀ 6PR MorningsĀ that there needs to be consistency around the country to limit road deaths.
“The number one thing that’s going to claim the life of a young Australian aged between 1 and 14,” he said.
“It’s second only to youth suicide in that 14 to 25 age bracket,
“I think we’ve got to look at a more robust national approach not just to licensing but how do we improve the education process right across the board.”
